What are some basic color matching do's and don'ts? - do the colors teal and purple match

I mean, how the colors are not really together. I have pants that are khaki, beige, black, gray, olive green and navy. I have shirts in many colors and jackets or sweaters in pale blue gray, dark gray, purple, blue, green and white. It's cold, so that everything shown is the outer garment.

What I really need not be together? (eg, black and blue? makes going?)
